Clear evidence, communication and policy wording remain central when income stops

ASIC Claims Scrutiny Highlights What Income Protection Customers Should Check?w=400

Recent regulatory attention on life insurance claims handling has again highlighted a practical issue for Australians who rely on income protection insurance: the value of cover is tested most clearly when a person is too unwell or injured to keep earning.
While the industry has been working to improve service standards, the latest scrutiny reinforces that delays, unclear requests for information and poor communication can make an already stressful period harder for claimants.

For income protection customers, the message is not simply that insurers need better systems. It is also a reminder to understand how a claim is likely to be assessed before a health setback occurs. Policies commonly require medical evidence, details of pre-disability income, occupational information and updates about recovery or work capacity. If those requirements are not clear, or if documents arrive late, a claim can become slower and more complicated than expected.

This is particularly important for people with variable earnings, self-employed workers and professionals with bonuses, commissions or fluctuating contracts. The amount payable may depend on how income is defined in the policy, whether business expenses are deducted, and what proof of earnings is accepted. Claimants may also be affected by offsets if they receive workers compensation, sick leave, Centrelink support or other insurance payments at the same time.

Another point for households to revisit is timing. Income protection does not usually begin paying immediately after someone stops work. The chosen waiting periods and benefit period can make a major difference to cash flow, premium affordability and the length of support available. A shorter waiting period may offer earlier assistance but can cost more, while a longer waiting period may suit someone with savings or employer sick leave.

From a consumer perspective, the latest claims-handling focus should prompt a simple review. Check the policy schedule, the definition of disability, exclusions, income calculation method, waiting period, benefit period and evidence requirements. Keep tax records, payslips, business accounts and medical records organised where possible. If a claim is needed, notify the insurer early and respond to requests promptly, while keeping copies of all communications.

For working Australians, income protection remains a key financial safety net. The lesson from continued industry scrutiny is that choosing cover is only part of the job. Understanding how the policy operates at claim time can help reduce uncertainty when income, health and household finances are already under pressure.

Recent transport and insurance industry attention on lithium-ion battery safety is a timely warning for Australian truck operators. The issue is no longer limited to consumer products catching fire in homes or warehouses. Batteries now move through freight networks in tools, scooters, e-bikes, electronics, spare parts and energy storage equipment, and that creates a different risk profile for carriers, depots and subcontracted linehaul work. - read more

Australia’s latest seasonal bushfire outlook is a practical reminder that fire risk is not confined to the height of summer. For many farms, the exposure begins well before a catastrophic fire day is declared, as grass growth, drying winds, stored fodder, machinery movement and access limitations combine to create a more complex risk profile than a standard rural home policy can address. - read more
