Fresh boating safety messaging from the Australian Maritime Safety Authority is a practical reminder that risk management starts long before a vessel leaves the ramp, marina or mooring.
While the safety focus is naturally on protecting lives, the same habits can also make a meaningful difference when Australian boat owners need to rely on their insurance.

For recreational skippers, personal watercraft riders and small commercial operators, the essentials remain familiar: check the forecast, carry suitable safety equipment, maintain communications, avoid overloading, ensure lifejackets are appropriate and serviceable, and keep the vessel in a seaworthy condition. These are not just compliance or common-sense steps. They can become important evidence if an incident later leads to a claim.

Most marine policies include conditions around reasonable care, lawful operation, maintenance and the intended use of the boat. That does not mean every accident will trigger a dispute, but it does mean owners should understand how their policy treats preventable damage, unseaworthiness, racing, hire or reward, navigation limits, mooring requirements and unattended storage. A claim involving a poorly maintained engine, expired safety gear or undisclosed commercial use can be more complicated than a straightforward collision or storm loss.

The insurance lesson is to treat pre-departure checks as part of the ownership record, not just a quick glance before launching. Useful habits include keeping receipts for servicing, photographing major upgrades, noting repairs, checking battery and fuel systems, and recording where the boat is normally stored. If accessories, electronics, tenders or fishing gear have been added since the policy was arranged, the sum insured may also need attention.

This is particularly relevant heading into busy holiday periods, when waterways become more congested and boats may be used by family members or friends who are less familiar with the vessel. Owners should confirm who is allowed to operate the craft, whether age or licence restrictions apply, and whether the policy responds while the boat is being towed, moored, launched or retrieved.

For charter, fishing tour and other income-producing use, disclosure is critical. A recreational policy may not respond in the same way once the boat is used for business activity, even if that activity is occasional. If plans have changed, it is better to address the issue before the next trip than during a claim.

AMSA’s reminder is ultimately a prompt to connect safety, maintenance and insurance into one routine. Before peak boating season, owners should review their documentation, confirm the vessel’s condition, and compare options if their current cover no longer reflects how, where or why they use their boat.

Recent transport and insurance industry attention on lithium-ion battery safety is a timely warning for Australian truck operators. Australia’s latest seasonal bushfire outlook is a practical reminder that fire risk is not confined to the height of summer. For many farms, the exposure begins well before a catastrophic fire day is declared, as grass growth, drying winds, stored fodder, machinery movement and access limitations combine to create a more complex risk profile than a standard rural home policy can address. - read more
